The Day After Tomorrow, 2009. Montage of film stills.

Made in June 2009, this is a story about memory. Liu attempts to tell the entire film in a single long take without editing. The camera records a fragment of the lives of older people in Mianyang, a city in northwestern Sichuan known as “China’s Science City”.

They regularly gather beside the artificial lake in People’s Park to make friends through singing, appearing relaxed, informal, unhurried and at ease. Without a reference to time, it would be difficult to recognise that the scene takes place two days before the first anniversary of the 12 May earthquake. “The day after tomorrow, we’ll meet again at the same time!”
